“Watching Virat chase, you understand the art of batting, how to control a chase and stay not out. It’s about shifting gears based on the situation,” Bethell said, offering a glimpse into the lessons he has absorbed in a high-pressure environment. The 22-year-old, currently in his second season with RCB, also spoke about adapting to the intensity of the Indian Premier League.“When I got to RCB, I was curious about the experience. Watching Virat, Rajat, and speaking to DK, I realised the game shifts here. It’s played at a high tempo; you have to be aggressive and brave,” he added.Bigger role awaits amid Salt’s absenceBethell’s opportunities have increased following the absence of fellow England opener Phil Salt, who has returned home for scans on a finger injury sustained last month.According to ESPNcricinfo, Salt damaged a finger on his left hand while attempting a diving stop during RCB’s clash against Delhi Capitals and has travelled back to the UK at the request of England’s management. While both the player and franchise remain hopeful of a quick recovery, his absence has opened the door for Bethell to cement his place at the top of the order. From Barbados to BengaluruReflecting on his journey, Bethell said, “I grew up in Barbados, always with a bat and ball… I moved to England for school, progressed to Warwickshire, and signed my first contract in 2021. A stress fracture set me back, but I came back strong… and then arrived in Bengaluru.”He also spoke about handling attention and the IPL spotlight. “The limelight is a funny thing… when people want to watch you play, it’s a privilege.”With RCB sitting second on the table and pushing for a playoff spot, Bethell’s continued development — and his lessons from Kohli — could prove crucial in the coming matches.
