Rockstar Games found itself at the centre of a political controversy after the White House and senior Trump administration officials used Grand Theft Auto VI-themed imagery to promote border security policies, sparking debate across social media among gamers and drawing a brief response from the game developer.Amid the growing debate, gaming outlet Kotaku sought Rockstar’s reaction to the use of its imagery by the administration. The company’s response was notably brief. A Rockstar spokesperson said: “No comment”.The row began after Rockstar officially unveiled the cover art for GTA 6 and announced pre-orders for the highly anticipated title. As has become common with major Rockstar marketing campaigns, the reveal turned into a cultural moment as brands, public figures and social media users started creating their own versions of the artwork and logo.Among those joining the trend was the White House’s official social media account, which shared a GTA VI-style image focused on US President Donald Trump. The post went viral, with many users pointing out the irony of a government account adopting imagery from a franchise that has long questioned authority, law enforcement and political institutions.The discussion intensified when US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) shared its own GTA-themed AI-generated image. Featuring stylised agents, a CBP helicopter and a border landscape, the post said that the administration had effectively “secured the border” before the release of GTA 6.The meme accompanied a link to a Breitbart report showing border enforcement figures supplied by CBP. According to the article, the agency recorded 13 consecutive months of zero releases of illegal migrants apprehended at the US-Mexico border. It also reported that southwest border apprehensions in May 2026 stood at 9,998, a figure CBP said was 94 per cent lower than the monthly average during the Biden administration.“Tough border security measures enacted by the Trump administration kept monthly illegal border crossing apprehensions at unprecedented levels,” the report stated.The article also noted increased narcotics seizures, claiming nationwide seizures of cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, fentanyl and marijuana rose by 32 per cent compared with May 2024. Fentanyl seizures in May 2026 were reportedly up 72 per cent from April.MAGA supporters praised the use of the viral GTA format to draw attention to enforcement policies, gamers questioned whether taxpayer-funded government accounts should be posting internet memes and AI-generated images for such a sensitive issue.The controversy grew further when US Department of Health & Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. posted an edited version of Rockstar’s GTA 6 reveal video. Sharing the clip with the caption, “We flipped the food pyramid before we got GTA 6,” Kennedy’s version featured himself, Trump and several AI-generated characters dressed as food items.Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch in November 2026 and is expected to become one of the biggest entertainment releases in history. It will succeed Grand Theft Auto V, which was released in 2013 and went on to become one of the best-selling video games of all time. According to publisher Take-Two Interactive, GTA V has sold more than 215 million copies worldwide and generated billions of dollars in revenue over the past decade.
