He made it clear that the trade discussion had nothing to do with the Maple Leafs’ dissatisfaction over Knies as a player. They were not actively trying to move Knies. Instead, the Maple Leafs were evaluating the market and trying to determine what kind of return he would bring to the team.

Friedman emphasized that it was an important decision. He further stated that the organization was analyzing, “What if we did this? What would the return be? I don’t think any of this talk around Knies has anything to do with him as a player.”In addition, he also revealed the names of the prominent NHL clubs that made serious attempts to acquire Matthew Knies from the Toronto Maple Leafs.
