LUCKNOW: At least 10 live cartridges were found in the possession of a minor girl who had reached a jail in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda to meet her lover on Thursday. A fake Aadhaar card and cash were also seized from the school student. She was subsequently handed over to the police.The intermediate-level student reached the jail at around 2 pm on August 6 for a scheduled meeting. However, discrepancies in her identity details during the entry process alerted jail personnel, who subjected her to a detailed search.A female jail warder recovered 10 live pistol/revolver cartridges from her bag, along with cash. An Aadhaar card bearing the name “Vaishnavi” was also found, while the girl had initially provided a different name to jail staff.The jail administration immediately prevented her from entering the premises and handed her over to Nagar Kotwali police along with the cartridges, identity document, cash and other materials.According to Jailor Aftab Ahmed Ansari, a meeting slip had been submitted for two visitors seeking to meet an undertrial prisoner. The girl was listed among the visitors for the second meeting shift.When she reached the jail entrance, officials found that her identity could not be verified against the details she had provided. Her responses raised further suspicion, prompting female staff to conduct a search between the first and second security gates.The search led to the recovery of the 10 live cartridges.During questioning, the girl eventually disclosed her actual identity, officials said. Police are now investigating the authenticity of the Aadhaar card and determining where and how it was obtained.During questioning, the girl reportedly told police that her father is an advocate and owns a licensed pistol.She allegedly said she had removed 10 cartridges from the firearm without informing her family because she feared her father might take an extreme step after learning about her relationship or her visit to the jail.Police are verifying this claim and examining the firearm licence and ammunition records to determine whether the recovered cartridges came from the licensed weapon.The man she had gone to meet has been identified as a resident of Chhedipurwa in the Jankinagar area of Gonda’s Nagar Kotwali.Police said accused was arrested after allegedly taking the minor away from her home on June 15. He has been lodged in Gonda District Jail since June 29 as an undertrial in a case registered under the POCSO Act.Police said the man has eight previous criminal cases registered against him and has been accused in cases involving assault and other offences.According to police, the girl and the accused had been in contact for around a year after meeting on social media. She allegedly told investigators that this was her first visit to the jail to meet him.Nagar Kotwal Bindeshwari Mani Tripathi confirmed that the girl was caught with 10 live cartridges during security checks at the jail gate and that a case had been registered.Police are investigating the source of the ammunition, the circumstances under which it was allegedly removed from the licensed firearm, and the purpose for which the girl carried it to the jail.The alleged fake Aadhaar card, cash and meeting slip have also been seized. Investigators are attempting to establish where the identity document was prepared and whether it was specifically obtained to facilitate the jail visit.Police registered a case under provisions including Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with relevant sections of the Arms Act, 1959, including Sections 9, 25 and 30, according to the FIR.The investigation has been assigned to Sub-Inspector Arpita Yadav, the FIR states.The FIR names the Jailor of District Jail, Gonda, as the complainant. The place of occurrence has been recorded as District Jail, Gonda, under the jurisdiction of Kotwali Nagar police station.Police are expected to determine how the girl obtained the 10 live cartridges, why she was carrying them while visiting the jail, and whether they were linked to any licensed firearm.Investigators will also examine the identity document used during the jail visit and ascertain the circumstances under which the name “Vaishnavi Singh” was being used.The visitor slip and other documents submitted by the jail administration will also form part of the investigation.The case assumes significance as the ammunition was detected during security screening at the jail gates, before the visitor could enter further into the prison premises.
