Google I/O 2026: Android 17 updates, Android XR, Gemini Intelligence and other things to expect

Google I/O 2026 officially kicks off tonight at 10:30 pm IST, broadcasting live from the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. The keynote will feature Google CEO Sundar Pichai, DeepMind chief Demis Hassabis and, most likely, the the executive heads of Google’s Search, Cloud and Android divisions. Google I/O comes about a week after Google Android head Sameer Samat touched upon the Android OS at the Android Show, revealing what to expect from Android 17, Gemini Intelligence for phones and the new Googlebook laptop category.The Google I/O keynote will likely expand on these updates and will announcements on what is coming next from Google’s corridors. Here is what to expect from Google I/O 2026:

Android 17 and Gemini Intelligence

Google has already given a sneak peek of what is coming to the Android platform. The Android Show confirmed several major upgrades that will soon roll out to premium Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel devices.The first is Gemini Intelligence, an on-device AI system that handles multi-step app automation, custom AI widget creation and an upgraded Material 3 design refresh. Other features include intelligent autofill, an intuitive system to accurately predict text and form inputs. The company also showcased “Rambler”, a multilingual dictation tool that can polish voice-to-text inputs, including natural “Hinglish” code-switching. Google announced that Quick Share is gaining native AirDrop compatibility on supported Android phones.

The next-generation Gemini Model

The headline announcement may be the next-generation Gemini model or big updates to the already available Gemini 3 variant. Wall Street analysts expect the new model to showcase massive leaps in deep reasoning, multimodality (understanding text, audio, and video simultaneously), and a significantly expanded context window.Users can also expect major updates to Google’s creative suites, including Veo (AI-video generator) and Lyria (its professional-grade music tool). Google has also been working on Beam, a video-conferencing technology that uses an array of specialised cameras to capture a user in real time, projecting them to the other end of the call as a life-like 3D model.

Android XR and Smart Glasses

While Google has been quietly demoing prototype AR glasses for over a year during its events, Google I/O can be the event where the company brings close to final product. Expect live demonstrations of Gemini-powered smart glasses built in collaboration with major lifestyle brands like Warby Parker, Samsung and Gentle Monster.

The ‘Aluminium OS’ Googlebook

Google confirmed that it is mergin Android ChromOS, and last week, the company showcased GoogleBook concepts, announcing that these notebooks will be build using premium materials built by Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo have already been revealed, the software running them remains a mystery.Leaked internal documents have pointed toward the official unveiling of Aluminium OS. The company is expected to announce the name and provide details about the new laptop operating system. It is said to have built from the ground up to natively run Android apps, cloud-based Chrome apps and desktop Gemini agents on a single lightweight substrate.
