Delhi government monitors transportation, sale and sacrifice of animals ahead of Eid

NEW DELHI: Delhi government has formed rapid response teams across all 13 districts ahead of Bakrid to crack down on illegal animal sacrifice, unauthorised slaughter and cruelty to animals in the national capital.The teams, constituted under the Animal Husbandry Unit on directions of development minister Kapil Mishra, have already started inspections in markets and sensitive areas across North-West, North-East, North, Central, South-West and West Delhi.Officials said the teams will monitor transportation, sale and sacrifice of animals during Eid-al-Adha celebrations and take immediate action in case of violations.“The advisory clearly states that no illegal sacrifice of any kind will be permitted during Bakrid. Sale and purchase of animals at public places is completely prohibited,” Mishra said.According to the government advisory, animal sacrifice will be allowed only at authorised and designated locations. Sacrifices on roads, lanes and other public places have been strictly banned.The minister also reiterated that slaughter or sacrifice of cows, calves, camels and other prohibited animals is completely banned in Delhi. Authorities have been directed to register criminal cases in instances of illegal transportation, unauthorised slaughter or animal cruelty.The advisory further stated that no cruelty should be inflicted during transportation of animals and meat cannot be sold at unlicensed locations. Authorities have also been instructed to ensure that blood and animal remains are not dumped in drains, roads or public sewage systems.The Delhi government said awareness campaigns through posters and social media will also be launched to spread awareness about animal welfare rules and civic responsibilities ahead of Bakrid.
