Student protest violence: Police may adopt 2022 formula to withdraw FIRs

NEW DELHI: While withdrawing the cases related to last Monday’s Parliament protest violence, Delhi Police may adopt a procedure used for the Republic Day 2022 Red Fort violence cases, sources said.Clarity on the matter is expected to emerge by Tuesday.In 2022, govt dropped FIRs related to the farm law protest through a process involving police, Delhi govt and the lieutenant governor. Police approached the then AAP govt with the proposal to withdraw 17 cases.“The file related to the cases was sent by then LG Anil Baijal’s office to the then Delhi home minister Satyendar Jain. It was approved by Jain and sent to the chief minister’s office.

The CMO then sent the file to the LG’s office on Feb 28 and the LG approved it the same day,” an officer who had handled the cases at that time recalled.On the student protest cases, Delhi Police has sought legal opinion on the withdrawal of the FIRs.Another option would be to approach Delhi High Court with a request to quash the cases.Police registered over 15 FIRs in connection with the violence at the protest. They also said anti-social elements have been identified and booked.Police will leave students or individuals without any criminal antecedents out of the probe’s ambit for nowThe cases have attracted charges of unlawful assembly, assault on public servants, criminal conspiracy, violation of prohibitory orders, and damage to public property.
