A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Indonesia’s Flores region on Thursday, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said. Reuters reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres. The tremor comes days after a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck off Flores, killing dozens and causing widespread damage in the region.The magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off Flores Island on August 15, with its epicentre located about 68 km north-northwest of Ende in East Nusa Tenggara. The shallow quake triggered landslides, damaged homes, schools, health facilities and government buildings, and generated small tsunami waves, with the highest recorded at about 1.61 metres. A tsunami warning issued for parts of the region was later lifted. The disaster has killed at least 73 people and injured more than 900, while nearly 60,000 residents have been displaced, according to Indonesian authorities. More than 3,000 aftershocks have been recorded since the main quake, keeping residents on alert and complicating rescue and relief operations in areas where landslides and damaged roads have restricted access.
