Tim Cook signed off as Apple chief executive on Monday the way he ran the company for 15 years, calmly and with the credit pushed elsewhere. In a farewell memo to Apple employees on his final day in the job, Cook wrote that this was a moment he always knew would come, and that it was still hard to believe he was writing the words. John Ternus takes over as Apple CEO on September 1.The Tim Cook memo is notable for what it leaves out. There is no product tease, no roadmap, and no mention of AI, regulation or China, the three pressures that will shape Ternus’s first year. Instead Cook spends most of it thanking staff, arguing that Apple’s culture is the thing an annual report can never capture, and reaching back to Steve Jobs and his line about leaving a dent in the universe. The sentence employees were waiting for came late. He is not leaving Apple, he said, only stepping away from a role he has loved deeply.
Tim Cook hands Apple to John Ternus, a hardware man and not a services one
Cook saved his warmest paragraph for his successor. He called Ternus brilliant and capable, and said few people understand what it takes to build world-changing products the way Ternus does. Coming from a CEO long accused of running Apple like an operations manager, the choice of words is pointed.Ternus has been senior vice president of hardware engineering, overseeing the entire device line-up. Recent launches under him include the ultra-thin iPhone Air, the cheaper MacBook Neo, and AirPods with hearing health features. Apple also pulled its Mac mini and Mac Studio releases earlier in the year to meet AI-driven demand. The promotion reads as a bet on hardware execution rather than a pivot to services.
Tim Cook is not leaving Apple, he is changing desks
From Tuesday, Cook becomes executive chairman of Apple’s board. He keeps the portfolio he was best at, managing governments in Washington and Beijing, at a point when tariff demands and political requests are landing on Apple’s desk with some regularity.Cook took over from Jobs in August 2011. The 15 years since brought the Apple Watch, AirPods, and a vastly expanded iPhone, iPad and Mac business. On X, he told the Apple community that his title changes on Tuesday but his affection for them will not, and signed the memo: “With all I have and all I am, I am always. Yours, Tim.”
