Rohit Roy, who started his career from Television and rose to fame with the 1990s show, Swabhimaan which aired on Doordarshan, has made some bold statements about TV actors. During his recent interview, Rohit Roy spoke about the differences between film and TV actors. He described television as a “dustbin medium” and said that TV actors often lack the class and conduct he associates with film actors.On Kindle Cast’s YouTube channel, Rohit was asked about the “caste system” in the entertainment industry and perceived divide between film and TV actors. He was also questioned about why the fame gained by television actors is often considered less valuable.Rohit said he feels TV actors often lack the “carriage” he sees in film stars, especially when they appear in public.
Rohit says film actors have certain amount of class
He shared, “You see any public appearance of a film actor, you see the carriage with which he or she comes out, especially if they are a star. Of course, everyone puts on a front. We have to put on a front. But their front is graceful, dignified, stylish, cool… There is a certain amount of style, class.”He then compared gatherings attended by television celebrities, Rohit said, “You see another gathering with lots of TV actors. Look at the way they behave, you will get your answer yourself.”Rohit said that although he is a TV actor himself, he has always been mindful of how he behaves and presents himself. “You have to conduct yourself with a certain amount of grace, dignity. You can’t do hoo-haa and make stupid comments because you know the paparazzi is there,” he said.
Rohit comments on TV actors revealing clothes
The actor also compared the way TV and film personalities dress. Rohit said that revealing outfits can be seen in both industries, but feels that film stars carry them with a different sense of style. He said, “Look at the kind of clothing. It’s not like film stars don’t wear revealing clothes but there is a certain style to it. I don’t know the name of this particular lady who is rampant all over social media but she hardly wears anything. So why are you… You are going to treat them badly.”The actor, who was last seen in Khatron Ke Khiladi on television further said that social media appearance can generate initial buzz but they can never earn respect.He said, “They are never going to respect you because what are you doing? You are not really doing anything. So I think this is one of the reasons. There are several other reasons also. I feel very few actors on television really know how to speak well to their audiences. Even their make-believe looks make-believe.”
Rohit calls Television dustbin
When asked if this showed a hierarchy between TV and films, Rohit said he clearly believes cinema is above television. “Cinema is cinema. It is for posterity. Television is a dustbin medium,” he concluded.Speaking about how his classic show Swabhimaan, Rohit said some clips from the show still appear on social media, while many other TV shows have been forgotten over the years. “I was just lucky to be there but there are so many shows that have created history in their time, but nobody knows,” he said, and quickly added, “But I still know Sholay, Deewaar. I still remember Gone with the Wind. So cinema is a natural next step every actor wants to do and why not?”Rohit said his first show was so successful that he never felt “inferior” to any other actor. However, he added, “But yes, we do get step-motherly treatment and it has been going on forever. When you see the better actors on television, they get the same respect. Maybe not the stardom, but respect.”
