NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu chief minister C Joseph Vijay is set to move a resolution in the state assembly on Thursday urging the Centre to recognise Tamil as the principal language of the Madras high court, official sources said.The resolution will be moved by Vijay during the assembly session and is likely to be taken up for discussion. It will seek a formal framework to ensure that judgments, decrees and judicial orders of the High Court are also made available in Tamil.

The move is expected to highlight Tamil’s status as a classical language. It will also point to the significant development of legal terminology in Tamil. The resolution is likely to cite technology-enabled translation facilities as another factor supporting the proposal.The state government will also refer to the existing legal provisions governing the use of regional languages in High Court proceedings and judgments. Under the current framework, a state’s official language can be used in addition to English, but this requires the Governor’s authorisation and the prior consent of the President of India.The resolution is also expected to recall an earlier attempt by the Tamil Nadu Assembly. On December 6, 2006, the House had passed a resolution seeking the use of Tamil in the Madras High Court. The resolution was subsequently forwarded to the Union government.The latest proposal seeks to revive the demand and push for Tamil to be recognised as the principal language of the Madras High Court.
